Volusia County's Animal Intake Shelter is Now Open
10/2/2025
Effective October 1, 2025, the Town of Pierson is no longer sheltering stray animals at the Halifax Humane Society. If you take an animal there you will be charged a $300.00 intake fee or turned away.
Residents must contact Volusia County Animal Services at (386) 248-1790. Residents who find stray animals in the Town of Pierson after October 1, 2025, must bring them to 2120 E. International Speedway in DeLand.
To meet the needs of the County’s jurisdiction, which includes unincorporated areas as well as Oak Hill and Pierson, through special agreements, Volusia County Animal Services have secured a 4,000-square-foot facility at 2120 E. International Speedway Boulevard in DeLand to serve as a shelter. The new facility is scheduled to open on October 1, 2025, as the County’s intake facility, housing dangerous dogs, bite-quarantine cases, rabies exposures, animal cruelty investigations, and strays from our defined service areas only.
It will not accept owner surrenders, which remain the responsibility of private nonprofit shelters.
